Tastes like childhood days

When I was a kid, we were often forced by our parents to take midday naps or siestas. Of course it was mighty unpleasant for all of us, except for the part where we wake up and the house smells like merienda. Sometimes it’s champorado, or burger, or turon, ginataang halo-halo. The house is just filled up with a delicious scent. Today I made my first ginataang halo-halo and it really just brought back happy childhood memories of my father making merienda for us. My favorite in ginataang halo-halo are the bilo-bilo, sago, and saging na saba. Of course, we all have different preferences about what goes into the ginataan, so papa had to accomodate what everyone wants. Therefore, 3 kinds of camote for mama, and some bananas, sago, and bilo-bilo for me and my brothers. Now that it’s all up to me, I can finally make the ginataan the way I want it. So I put extra bilo-bilo and banans in, and I picked only the camote that I like best (the yellow kind).

That’s one of the fun things about cooking. You can make adjustments to whatever you’re making so that it suits your taste more. Today I also made palitaw for merienda (since no stores sell palitaw in our area), thanks to that clip I watched in Batibot when I was a kid. Here are the instructions on how to cook Palitaw and Ginataang Halo-Halo.

Oh, I know what you mean! As for me, ginataang halo halo, real halo halo and turon/banana cue remind me of summer afternoons at my grandma’s house when I was young :)

Guess what? My mom actually made some ginataang halo-halo thing morning. I was a little mad cuz she made it before I woke up and I didn’t get to make the little balls like I used to always do. Anyway, I love the bilo-bilo, banana, sago and langka—I always pick out the camote cuz I don’t like it :P

making the bilo-bilo was our task too! i like how we line them up on plates so they look like little white mothballs. :D
